During "Sand casting", first place the lower mold on a flat plate, put a sand box, fill the sand and scrape it tightly. After the lower mold is made, turn the sand mold 180 degrees, put the upper mold, sprinkle the parting agent, put the sand box, fill the sand and make it tight and flat, turn the upper sand box 180 degrees, take out the upper and lower molds respectively, then turn the upper mold 180 degrees and put it together with the lower mold. The sand mold is made and waiting for pouring. This process is commonly known as "sand casting".


Sand casting is a production method that pours molten metal into the mold cavity and obtains the product after cooling and solidification.

In the automobile manufacturing process, many parts are made of cast iron, accounting for about 60% of the weight of the whole vehicle, such as cylinder block, transmission case, steering housing, rear axle housing, brake drum, various brackets, etc.  Sand casting is usually used to manufacture cast iron parts.The raw material of sand casting is mainly sand, which is mixed with binder, water, etc.


The material of sand casting must have a certain bonding strength so that it can be molded into the desired shape and can withstand the erosion of high-temperature molten iron without collapsing. In order to mold the cavity in the sand mold that matches the shape of the casting, a model must first be made of wood, called a wooden mold. The volume of the hot molten iron will shrink after cooling. Therefore, the size of the wooden mold needs to be increased according to the shrinkage rate based on the original size of the casting, and the surface that needs to be cut and processed needs to be thickened accordingly.


Sand Casting


When sand casting produces hollow castings, it is necessary to make sand cores and corresponding core wooden molds (core boxes). With the wooden mold, you can make a cavity sand mold. When making sand molds, you need to consider how to separate the upper and lower sand boxes to take out the wooden mold, where the molten iron flows in, and how to fill the cavity to obtain high-quality castings.


After the sand mold is made, it can be poured, that is, molten iron is poured into the cavity of the sand mold. During pouring, the temperature of the molten iron is 1250~1350 degrees, and the temperature is higher during smelting. Then it has to go through processes such as sand removal, repair, and polishing before it can become a qualified casting.
